Villa 403 – An articulation of values
The project, completed in the year 2020 comprises a built up area of 2530 sq ft with a carpet area accounting to 1890 sq ft. It is within this space that the architect was required to achieve the required interiors for the family of 6 which include an elderly couple with their son and his family of 2 kids. The design for Villa 403 was an attempt at articulating the various values of the residents of the house.
The ground floor has been conceptualized around the puja room, a central space for the elderly couple. A touch of traditional essence was then carried out throughout the ground floor as an extension to the puja space into the drawing area. The puja room has a brick jaali on two opposite walls to disperse the presence of the room throughout the house. The choice of details were a reflection of the same. The architect however, tried to keep the contemporary nature of the younger couple by playing with the arched wall. The sliding breakfast counter is also another element in the ground floor that oozes contemporary design nature with it doubling up as a working counter unit by pushing back when not in use.
As one moves towards the first floor, the design resonates with the values of the younger couple. More attention was given to work spaces both for the couple and the kids within their respective bedrooms. Clean design language with a touch of contemporary colors can be witnessed here. The children’s bedroom has a sense of quirkiness along with enough thought given to storage with cubic storage units which double up as a decor device as well. The second floor apart from the two bedrooms for the young couple and kids have an additional guest bedroom for the elder son and his family when they visit the city.
The details curated across the house are testimony to the family’s love for all things natural. . Old saris of the women of the house were sandwiched in between glass as decorative shutters for the cupboards. The same fabric were also used as the soft board cover to continue the same material palette. The textures across the house are a reflection of the closer to the roots theme that have been used across the project. Natural yellow and green oxides have been used at various walls for a pop of color. To this finish, leaf impressions were added to achieve the textures of the natural elements. The project, unlike others completed by the architect, had multiple shades to be achieved within the same built area. It was through a thorough awareness of the requirements of each individual that the design could be a synchronized amalgamation of the same.
